Storyteller • Writer • Speaker
Every year, when I teach Journalism at Marianopolis College, I invite journalist Helen Wolkowicz to speak to my class about her areas of specialization, which include transgender identities and issues.
Helen is a knowledgeable, sensitive and powerful speaker who has the wonderful ability to make complex subjects accessible to young people. Frankly, my colleagues and I have learned a great deal from her talks too.
What a pleasure to work with a professional like Helen. She quickly grasps the challenges at hand and delivers great work on time and on target. She is also open to comments and new ideas and can easily turn a stressful project into a success.
Helen came to Air Canada for one year to replace the Managing Editor of our monthly employee news magazine while she was on maternity leave. There was supposed to be a one month overlap to allow knowledge and information transfer between Helen and the existing editor, however due to pregnancy complications that never happened.
Helen jumped right in and with little or no help, preparation or even understanding of the airline industry, she produced a truly excellent magazine. Throughout the course of the year Helen consistently produced bigger and better magazines, taking the magazine from an average of 16 to 30 pages and progressively incorporating new features and work processes. Helen left the magazine better than she found it and along the way inducted and coached new members joining the editorial team.
Helen possesses crack writing skills and is an excellent communicator who is extremely organized, efficient, creative and enthusiastic. She consciously makes an effort to motivate, coach and mentor the people she works with. I highly recommend her for her writing, communication and management skills!
